Expander is a fixed or removable orthodontic device used to correct narrow dental arches, crowded teeth and abnormal jaw development. It expands the width of the maxillary or mandibular dental arches by applying gentle mechanical force to improve the occlusal relationship and facial symmetry. It is mainly used for skeletal expansion in children during the period of tooth replacement, and dental expansion in adolescents and adults. It is the core tool for non-surgical arch expansion in orthodontic treatment.
Advantages:
1. Precise mechanical control: Bony expansion (adolescents): Promote the transverse development of the maxillary bone through the expansion of the midpalatal suture. Dental expansion (adults): Tilt and move the posterior teeth to expand the width of the dental arch.
2. Biocompatible materials: Medical grade stainless steel/titanium alloy: corrosion-resistant, hypoallergenic, and safe for long-term wear.
3. Minimally invasive adjustment mechanism: Spiral force multiplier: The patient or doctor controls the expansion speed by rotating the key (daily/weekly adjustment). Elastic deformation design: Devices such as Quad Helix provide continuous light force to reduce pain.
Indications:
1. Dental arch narrowness: Insufficient width of maxillary or mandibular dental arch leads to crowded teeth and crossbite (underbite).
2. Bone dysplasia: maxillary underdevelopment (before closure of midpalatal suture), bilateral posterior crossbite.
3. Orthodontic pretreatment: provide space for teeth to align and reduce the probability of tooth extraction.
4. Functional improvement: expand the nasal cavity and upper airway, and assist in the treatment of mild OSA (obstructive sleep apnea).
